How Modern Technology Keeps Advancing

With each new wave of technological advancement it is difficult to remember what life was like before the "old" technology dominated. Think about the Walkman. At the time it was invented it offered people the chance to take their music or audiobooks with them wherever they went. The first generation of Walkman were quite clunky but they soon learnt how to make them smaller.
Then came the compact disc, offering the chance to skip to a particular track and a better sound quality. Soon the cassette Walkman was forgotten. In the same way, the CD Walkman or Discman was soon made obsolete by the MP3 player. These devices offered the chance to listen to several albums, all within a device no bigger than a packet of cigarettes.
Now we have what seems like the world at our fingertips, quite literally. We are able to listen to our entire music collection, download new tracks on the move, watch music on YouTube or TV, look up any information we choose about the artists on the internet all on a device that happens to be our phone, camera, email centre among many more other applications.
Have you ever wondered what makes these things possible. The continual advancement is in no small part down to the army of scientists and inventors who have a thirst to continually make things better. Paul Eisler in 1936 created the first printed circuit board (PCB). These are the electronic inner workings that have enabled devices to become smaller and offer increasingly more functionality. Without them we would not have even been able to see the development of the first Walkman all those years ago. Since then, inventors have developed and redeveloped more and more ways to improve the minute technology that we take for granted each and every day.
Try to imagine having to explain what your smartphone can do to someone who fell asleep in the 1980's and has just woken up! They would think you were quite mad. When inventing the radio, Marconi was almost sectioned and sent to a mental hospital as no-one could understand the concept of radio waves and their use in communication. Thankfully, he wasn't and radio was one of the technologies that changed the world for the better.
So, next time you pick up your phone, listen to some music on your MP3 player or do anything that has electronic devices involved, even if it is the washing, think about the fact it was all made possible with some very clever people and the little old printed circuit board!

Books and Technology

With our rapid evolution in the world of technology, one should never be surprised at new and unique outlets for expression. Not only does the internet make new art forms available to us, but it also opens up the options to become collaborative and get involved.
Nowadays, writers have the option to instantly send their books to editors and peers over the internet. This leads to quicker turnover rate, and allows the writer to receive feedback almost instantaneously. While many believe that the rise of internet technology signifies bad news for novel authors and editors, others believe that it is the perfect too to write and publish more efficiently.
If you're an author, you'll know how difficult it is to get your books published. If getting published isn't difficult enough, it's almost equally as difficult to get other people to take the time out of their day to read your material. The internet allows of quicker access to your reading material, and gives you the option to spread your work throughout a myriad of sources.
With the use of television, social networking sites, and video games constantly being on the rise, we are running into the risk that books are slowly becoming phased out. Why should we spend six hours reading a book when we can relax and get the entire story in a two hour movie? Well, there are many reasons why reading material is essential to human growth and development.
First, books allow us to use our imagination in a way that television and movies cannot. While reading a novel, we can contemplate on issues such as character development and emotion. Regardless of how many people read the same novel, the protagonist will always be viewed slightly differently in the minds of each individual reader. Furthermore, reading often acts as a type of therapy for many people. Most readers tend to find something in a character with which they identify, and through that connection, the reader and writer are able to take a journey together. Essentially, the writer cannot exist without the reader, and vice versa.
Because American children are reading less and less, due to the influx of media and television sources, they are becoming increasingly illiterate. While we cannot force children to read, we must encourage them as much as possible to choose books over movies at a young age. Watching the screen turns people into consumers, whereas reading turns people into the creators. Many studies show that encouraging reading at a young age greatly improves one's learning and attention skills later in life.
Learning to effectively read and write also help to improve one's overall attention span. If you are successful and well-trained in literacy skills, you are sure to go a long way. Many people don't realize how important writing skills are to succeed in life, but if you are searching for a top notch career, chances are that you will have to be a decent writer. It's as simple as this: Reading books greatly helps to improve your overall writing skills.
Site developed to make easier be a writer, with a possibility to be a contributor on other people books or get contribution in your own. Collaborative Books, with no owner.

Power to the Common Man
We've heard well enough about how technology is expanding exponentially, but what nobody's talking about is how we, as people... are not. The common man resents, fears and will rebel against a technocracy, so technology is at its best when it's available and accessible to the common man. Like Prometheus stealing fire from the gods to give to the masses (minus the daily eagle tearing your liver out thing) the top technologies of the day place power over runaway technology into the hands of regular people.
3D Printing: It's Like Netflix for Solid Objects
What could be better than your own, private Star Trek Replicator? Enter your selection, press a button, and the machine spits out a Salisbury steak dinner... Or, a distributor cap... We're not quite there yet, but 3D printing offers up a reasonable facsimile (no pun intended). All you need is 3D software, a 3D printer and the wherewithal to design your own computerized geometric renderings and, voila! Things on demand! Industry has been 3D printing things for years, now. Manufacturers have 3D printed components for everything from cars to buildings to jet planes. The medical community uses some of the same principles as3D printing to engineer human organs.
Rising printer sales over the last ten years have driven down prices and, on top of that, the Replication Rapid-Prototyper (RepRap) Project has advanced an open-source 3D printer technology upon which a plethora of companieslike BotMill and Bits From Bytes have built ultra-cheap 3D printers. What's more, 3D printing services have sprung up around the web, from consumer-friendly Shapeways to the higher-end industry-grade Redeye.
The confluence of these events has resulted in making 3D printing at home an affordable proposition. Hobbyists can fashion jewelry and knick-knacks in the comfort of your own home. Artists can sculpt statues without getting their hands dirty. As awareness of 3D printing grows, so too will demand and, with that, new services will surely follow. All this makes this one a technology to watch in 2012.
Space, the Private Frontier?
Even since we humans spent our nights huddled around campfires on the open savannah, we've ever looked at the moon and stars and wondered, dreamed up stories and formulated hypotheses about what's up there. It is for this reason that the moon landing in 1969 is the most momentous event in human history. Today, we're left wondering "what happened to all that?"
In 2010, President Obama scuttled the space shuttle and effectively drove the last nail into U.S. aspirations toward space. In hindsight, the space race was more about gaining the upper hand in the Cold War than it was about realizing our destiny in the stars. When the Berlin Wall came down, so did any hope of exploring our universe in earnest.
However, since the turn of the century, commercial availability of aerospace technology has broadened to the point that "going where no man has gone before" may pass from the purview of government to the hands of private enterprise.
Though we've been hearing about Virgin Galactic-brainchild of the ever-mercurial Richard Branson-since 2004, the privatized purveyor of suborbital spaceflights has yet to get off the ground. But this might just be the year they make it happen. The company plans to conduct powered test flights in 2012 in the hope of getting to space. So far, over 450 people have signed up to ride in Virgin Galactic's SpaceShipTwo (which seats six) for their six minutes in the sun. Tickets to ride Virgin Galactic start at $200,000 per. Compare this with the $265 million-adjusted for inflation-it cost to put Alan Shepard in space on the Mercury-Redstone 3 mission. And what's 200 grand anyway? You could find that in your couch.
Speaking of Your Couch...
Our number three tech of the year is a little closer to home. I'm talking about the living room, in this case, the connected living room.
So much attention of late has been placed on mobile, but the real goings on are in the immobile. Increasingly, when at home, our principal connection with the outside world takes place through our televisions.
A number of companies are vying for the coveted spot of gatekeeper of that connection, but they're taking different approaches to that end. On the one hand, you've got Microsoft, who is busy proving that the Xbox 360 is more than just a games console. The company has formed media partnerships with broadcasters and content providers like Netflix and Pandora, and these initiatives position it to become the one-box stop in the connected living rooms around the world. The other side of that coin is smarter televisions. Connected TV platforms strive to combine the best of both TV and the internet. The interactive, open-standards-based HbbTV is right now gaining momentum in Europe and GoogleTV has been picking up steam in the States. Mirroring Microsoft's recent moves, GoogleTV has allied with cloud gaming provider OnLive and, clearly, they're positioning themselves to take on Microsoft head-on.
These are simply two different approaches to the same end: one device to rule all them living rooms. One area where Microsoft maintains an edge is its Kinect motion sensing input device. Recent Xbox initiatives already afford consumers gestural, even voice control over their viewing experience, and we can expect more out of Microsoft as the year progresses. Also, be on the lookout for television manufacturers equipping their new wares with these same features.

New Technologies for Water Leak Detection

Water is the world's most valuable resource and endeavor to conserve are of the highest precedence. Fresh water in rivers, streams, creeks, lakes, reservoirs, and in underground is vitally important in our life. As population is growing gradually, so the demand of the water commodity is also increasing. There are so many areas just like Jodhpur, Jaisalmer and various cities of the world, where the rainfall occurs as minimum as possible but people are surviving there because they have planned module of saving every valuable drop of water. By considering those areas, the question arises in everyone's mind that why won't we save every drop of water by conserve it. There are so many reasons by which water is wasted unnecessarily like leaking of pipes, water is flowing in toilets, open shower in bathrooms etc. The most common reason is leakage of water due to bursting and old quality of pipes, that include inadequate corrosion protection, older main supply, Installation of pipes in a faulty way, poor quality of pipes that causes rust immediately, The suppliers of water are illiterate they not able to judge the excessive pressure of water so they supply water through narrow pipelines that causes bursting, ground movement due to extreme weather conditions, and excessive loads and vibration from road traffic. When leaks prevent water from reaching end consumers, utilities lose revenue and incur unnecessary costs.
According to the survey the world's having limited supply of fresh drinking water that seriously requires careful management. Yet according to the Report Card for America's Infrastructure, prepared by Civil Engineers of the American Society, "Each day, 6 billion gallons of drinking and fresh water vanished, mostly due to old, leaky pipes that cannot able to serve to the population of California. The California Department of Water Resources estimates that about 81 billion gallons of water leaks from municipal systems in the state each year. "
There so many techniques by which we can prevent water leakage or find a leak. Firstly we have to do this in the planned strategy. The various latest technology are 24-Hour Data Logging, Pipeline pressure Testing, Acoustic leak detection, Visual leak detection, computerized correlation technology, Routine municipal leak detection surveys.
In 24-Hour Data technology that is used during high time when silence is all there i. e. during night to analyze possible sounds coming from water leak in high population and traffic area Digital Correlating Data Loggers can be used for sensing water leaks sounds. The benefits of data loggers are that it operates overnight and they can able to detect the minute sound in high traffic areas. In Pipeline pressure testing, testing of the infrastructure of water transmission areas, the main objective of this technique is to detect the pressure of new hydraulic pipes that are fitted in areas where most probably water leak persists. In Acoustic leak detection technology by sensing the noise of leak in leaking prone areas.
In Toto, it is responsibility of every individual to save water by informing to Municipal Corporation in case he/she finds leakage of water in public places because water is very valuable and precious for us.

The Best Applicant Tracking Technologies Are Easy To Use

Job applicant tracking systems have become a part of how business is done today. It used to be that these sorts of technologies were primarily used by large companies and corporations. They had a lot more people and positions to keep track of, and had the financial capacity to invest in such targeted business technologies, which were - back then - comparatively costly. Nowadays, that has all changed. The associated technologies have dropped in price as they became more widespread, and smaller businesses now use them in place of a far more costly human resource management department. This wider, more mainstream use has led the leading applicant tracking system makers to focus on usability.
Usability is an important factor in the use of job applicant tracking becoming a more common means of handling the multitude of human resource management associated tasks. While in larger businesses that have a dedicated human resource management staff or in the big corporations that have an entire department of people managing the myriad of tasks surrounding the effective management of human resources there are likely to be staffers specializing in computer operation, that is not typically the case in smaller businesses. Often, any type of computer work, including using such programs as ATS applicant tracking or job recruitment software, is going to be done by the owner of the business and perhaps one or two others.
Certainly computer comfort levels are increasing throughout the population, but there are still a large proportion of smaller business owners that, while able to perform basic functions on the computer, are not really comfortable with those that are more complex. This is the scenario that the makers of the top applicant tracking systems had in mind when engineering the most recent of these types of targeted business technologies - improving the typical end user's experience and increasing their ability to gain the maximum potential benefits of using such technologies. By designing these systems in a more intuitive fashion and making them easier to use, the leading applicant tracking systems have contributed significantly to small business success.
That's because often it is specifically smaller businesses that have the most to gain from using job applicant tracking systems. The increase in efficiency and cost effectiveness in achieving staffing goals makes more of a difference in overall success, comparatively and proportionately, to small businesses because they typically operate with smaller budgets and thinner profit margins. Increasing their ability to reach into the broader labor pool and effectively compete with larger and better funded companies for talent and labor helps these smaller businesses to be more competitive on every level. Furthermore, the top applicant tracking systems have features that help the user be sure that everything related to recruiting and hiring applicants is done in full compliance with federal, state, and local employment law.
A quality applicant tracking system can have a positive impact on business efficiency and overall well being, especially for a small business, which is almost always operating on a righter budget within narrower margins. Taking advantage of the leading applicant tracking system manufacturers' recent focus on ease of use is a smart idea that has become far more affordable these days, especially with the addition of cloud and software as a service options for acquiring such targeted business technologies. You business may not be able to afford a dedicated human resource management staff, but applicant tracking technologies are certainly within the budget of the typical small business.

A Rundown of Different Circuit Breaker Technologies

Your circuit breaker is the most basic form of electrical safety device that your home has. It works by monitoring the electricity flowing through your circuits, and shutting off the power whenever excess electricity is detected. This can help to prevent damage due to power surges, overheating and overloaded circuits. This can protect your appliances and other electrical devices from dangerous levels of electricity. Most importantly, your circuit breaker can help save you from potentially deadly electrical shocks. Although they all perform the same basic function, there are several different types of breakers available.
· Thermal Circuit Breaker - A Thermal breaker works by monitoring the heat that is created by electricity flowing through a circuit. Its sensors are designed to shut off the flow of power whenever heat rises to a predetermined, dangerous level. Thermal circuit protection normally comes in the form of a thin metallic "bridge" that connects two contact posts. Whenever excess heat is experienced, the strip will bend, causing it to break connection with the posts. This causes the power to cease flowing through this circuits. In most cases, a thermal breaker will reconnect the circuit whenever the heat returns back to a safe level. It is commonly used in circuits that are very sensitive to small electrical current changes.
· Magnetic Circuit Breakers - Magnetic breakers work by measuring the magnetic force that is created when electricity flows through your electrical system. A magnetic breaker is made up of a contact plate that is made of two different pieces. Whenever the two pieces are touching, electricity can flow across them. Under the right situations, the plates will separate, causing the breaker to trip. Although this type of protection is very reliable, it will not always break the flow whenever power increases very gradually. Because of this, it is not as ideal as thermal protection for very sensitive electronic devices.
· Combined Protection - Because of the complexity of our homes and electronic devices, most modern breaker panels use a combination of thermal and magnetic circuit protection. Because each type of circuit breaker technology has its ups and downs, using both to protect your expensive electronics is the most ideal situation. This way, you have protection both against fast, catastrophic power surges and any type of electrical even that causes excessive heat build-up.
Whether your electrical panel uses thermal, magnetic or both technologies to keep your home's electrical system safe, it is important that you take care when it comes to maintaining and monitoring your breaker panel. If you have breakers that trip frequently, for example, it is highly recommended that you have a licensed electrician come take a look to ensure that there is not a problem with your breaker or the electrical panel itself. In many cases, this will signal the need to upgrade your panel to ensure that you have enough power available to satisfy your daily needs.

Electric Hypersensitivty and New Technologies

My story and Electro Hypersensitivity
In 1993 at the age of 37 I was diagnosed with a mild heart condition called HCM-Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy... quite simply put... one of the chambers of my heart had a thickening on one septum which reduced blood flow and capacity... this condition is controlled successfully by beta blockers which I will take for the rest of my life.
Concurrent with this situation I developed a condition called AFIB, atrial fibrillation. In effect my heart would lose it's rhythm and race, slow down, add extra beats and I would always know when this was happening as I'd get a feeling in my chest. AFIB can be a serious condition because if the condition persists for prolonged periods of time blood clots can form and cause a stroke. While living in Toronto until 2003 my condition was closely monitored by an excellent cardiologist from Sunnybrook Medical Centre. There were several emergency trips to the hospital, usually around 5:00am in the morning when my afib attacks always seemed to occur... but I was always lucky as my heart always seemed to have the ability to regain sinus rhythm without the need for medical intervention.
In 2003 We moved to Waterloo Ontario and I found what I thought was a good cardiologist as he came from the Ottawa Heart Institute. One of the first things he did was to put me on an antiarrhythmic drug called Amiodarone. I took this drug for four years and while I still had occasional afib attacks they were less frequent.
In the fall of 2006 I decided to take a part time job back in broadcasting as a reporter/news anchor. Around Christmas time I began experiencing a fullness in my throat, the inability to clear my throat and I began to have symptoms that affected my ability to work in broadcasting. One morning while I was shaving I noticed my throat appeared as if there was something the size of a tennis ball lodged in it. I immediately made an appointment to see the cardiologist and his response to me was that there was nothing wrong.
By March of 2007 I had dropped more than twenty five pounds, was unable to sleep at night due to the pounding sound of my irregular heart beat in my ears. These attacks scared me as they were now lasting for hours. This was something new.
I ended up in the emergency ward at one of the local hospitals. Many of the symptoms I was having resembled a heart attack. But fortunately for me that wasn't the case... I was in hyperthyroid storm... My thyroid was overloaded with iodine and in fact was so bloated that radiographic images were almost impossible to be taken as there was little or no place for the radioactive isotope to be absorbed into the thyroid.
My wife told me that literally overnight I had transformed from a basically healthy male adult to having the appearance of a frail old man. The intervention of an endocrinologist saved my life and by the late fall miraculously I was almost back to normal having gained back most of the weight I had lost. The miracle in all of this is that my thyroid which I was told was destroyed and that I'd have to take hormones for the rest of my life, started functioning normally again. This whole experience had been caused by a rare allergy I had to the drug Amiodarone.
Had my cardiologist truly listened to me and done a proper job of examining me when I saw him in January of 2007, I would have never had to go through this life threatening experience. Throughout all of this ordeal I sought out information on the causes of AFIB. A lot of the information I read said that things like caffeine could cause it. So I eliminated all the possible triggers I could. But still the afib persisted.
Throughout the 1990's and into the 2000's I had worked for a few big consumer electronics companies and was quite often sitting in an office setting under bright fluorescent lighting. I would suffer from low energy, headaches, palpitations, shortness of breath and an overall feeling of uneasiness. I had the fluorescent lights above my desk removed at one company and placed a small lamp on my desk.
Within a day the headaches and lethargy disappeared. I found this quite interesting. The other thing I clued into was that when working on the old tube computer monitors I used to get head and eye aches. Upon further examination I discovered these symptoms only occurred when the refresh rate of the monitor was at 60HZ. By simply raising the refresh rate to 72hz the symptoms disappeared.
Was I on to something here?... If I was... I didn't truly understand what I had stumbled on.
Throughout all of the stints I have had working in the consumer electronics industry that started in the early 1990's and continued on through 2009, I never clued into the fact that all the technologies I was selling, like cordless phones, cell phones, televisions, radios, all had one thing in common. They all emitted radiation in some form or another and I was immersed in this world not only through work but by embracing the technologies in my home.
May 31st 2011 was a day I will remember for the rest of my life. This was the day the World Health Organization reversed its position on whether or not non ionizing radiation from wireless technologies could affect the health of people. Previously the WHO said there was no effect but on May 31 they did a 180 degree turn and stated the following:
Lyon, France, May 31, 2011 The WHO/International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified radio frequency electromagnetic fields as possibly carcinogenic to humans (Group 2B), based on an increased risk for glioma, a malignant type of brain Cancer associated with wireless phone use. I immediately started reading and researching and calling people, asking questions and despite the announcement from the WHO, the level of denial was stronger than ever as to whether this electrosmog that we are immersed in everywhere could affect our health.
It seems the scientific community which doesn't have a vested interest monetarily in this huge issue says we need to be careful and do more research and follow people form more than ten years as cancer in most cases has a long latency period. And the telecom Industry, to this moment continues to deny there is a potential problem, touting studies they have paid for that are riddled with vagueness, testing inconsistencies and the major problem being they haven't followed test subjects for much more than ten years.
They don't want to talk about where the statistics go when people are followed beyond ten years because it is scary. Never in the history of mankind has a technology been in the hands of everyone, young and old... a technology that has never been tested for long term safety as to it's effect on our bioelectric bodies.
We are electric... all around us are different frequencies... some good... some bad... but as more and more research continues to be compiled... we are learning more with each passing day.
Which brings me to the final chapter in my adventure for now... I have had the fortune of meeting two incredible women, albeit not in person, but over the telephone. Dr. Devra Davis heads up a non profit organization called the Environmental Health Trust. She is tireless in her efforts to get the word out to people to be vigilant and seek to understand the invisible threat we are facing each and every day and the impact it will have on our lives. http://environmentalhealthtrust.org/
And then there is Dr. Magda Havas. Magda Havas is Associate Professor of Environmental & Resource Studies at Trent University where she teaches and does research on the biological effects of environmental contaminants. http://www.magdahavas.com/biography/
I have only had the opportunity to speak to Dr. Havas once but that conversation changed my life. Based on a study Dr. Havas carried out dealing with electro-sensitivity in some people when exposed to radio frequencies I decided to try an experiment in my own home. I disconnected all my cordless phones, reinstalled land lines and turned off my wifi. Was this an inconvenience... you bet it was. Before I did this I purchased some testing equipment because I wanted to see for myself just how much radiation was being generated in my home especially when I was in close contact with the emitting devices like a wireless router or a cordless phone.
After I turned these devices all off the very next day when I arose in the morning I immediately knew something was different. I felt energized and alert and over the coming days I learned to exist without wifi and without cordless phones because I needed to find out if my afib was caused by exposure to these frequencies. You should also know that I work from home so making these changes had a huge impact on my health.
As 2012 nears to a close I can tell you that I no longer suffer from afib... I can tell you that my family has accepted the challenge and made changes in our home in order to live a healthier lifestyle. We don't know the long term effects of exposure to all the electrosmog. And while many conclusions have been stated via completed and ongoing studies we just don't know with out a doubt why autism is on the rise for example... many studies link it to exposure of this invisible contaminant while women are pregnant... It has been demonstrated over and over that cellular damage can occur at levels far below what the government deems as safe.
And yet here in North America, more cell phone towers are constructed right in the middle of residential neighbourhoods. Children routinely go to school and spend 6-7 hours in an environment where the wifi exposure levels have been shown to not be safe... This is why I am so outraged that our safety code in Canada has not been updated since 1999... at that time the code was based on thermal heating... in other words as long as the surrounding tissue didn't heat up more than a degree Celsius... then it was safe.
The fact that it has been demonstrated time and time again that thermal heating does not have to occur in order for cell DNA to be broken should have triggered a re-evaluation of Safety Code 6 here in Canada. It has not happened. Dr. Havas has stated that conservatively about 3% of the population has a severe reaction from exposure to all this invisible junk. She estimates 30% of the population has a moderate sensitivity but that because the sensitivity is nominal, most people wouldn't attribute activities they are doing as being the cause of some of the symptoms they routinely experience.
Dr. Havas states that by 2017 about 50% of the population will be moderately sensitive. The effect of exposure is cumulative. In my home I have created an oasis in that I have eliminated the close exposure to stimuli that cause me issues. I also feel good about creating a healthier environment for my wife and young daughter to live in. I am not as fanatical about all of this as some people are but I know there are subtle changes we can make that can have a huge impact just by being cognizant of where we place items like clock radios, which incidentally give off a huge amount of electromagnetic radiation, how we route electrical wires around the rooms we spend time in, especially places like the bedroom where our bodies use sleep as an essential ingredient to replenish our life force. Having power cords wrapped around behind the bed where you place you head on a pillow for the night isn't a good thing because you are in the electrical field.
Any plug on any appliance that doesn't have three prongs is not grounded properly and emits dirty electricity.
I wrote this article for a couple of reasons.
The first is to raise awareness.
The second is to confirm there are many people like myself who suffer from the effects of exposure to this electrosmog.
We can 't wait for the government and the industry to do anything because right now they are still saying everything is just fine, but that's an outright lie.
If we wait until there is 100% confirmation it will be too late.
A big part of this picture is about You becoming more aware about how you use these wonderful technologies. Learn to use them safely and not excessively. I am particularly concerned about children and teens. Too many questions are going unanswered.
Many that the industry either refuses to address or spins.
The Europeans are so far ahead of North America.
They get it!
Please visit https://www.facebook.com/Radirid It is full of content..educate yourself and take action to reduce your exposure to all the electrosmog we are being bathed in on a daily basis.

Mobile Technologies: The Latest Trend in Classroom Learning

The 21st century has brought about a major transformation in the ways children perceive learning. An increasing number of educators are nowadays resorting to various mobile learning technologies for effective streamlining of classroom education. Research has however shown that the ownership of portable digital devices amongst children aged 4 - 14 are rising at an exponential rate. The most popular among them being the iPod touch which is slowly becoming popular in classrooms across the globe due to its user friendly features like touch screen and in-built Wi-fi access. Similar is the case with the iPad.
Until recently, installing a desktop computer was considered to be the best thing that schools did to integrate technology with their curriculum. But its lack of portability was one of its major drawbacks. The emergence of mobile devices has however solved this problem to a large extent. Their portability and ubiquity has enabled teachers to easily move them into classrooms and incorporate it as part of the learning modules. The biggest advantage of having these devices is that they save a lot of space and hence schools do not need to allot a separate room for installing computer systems. Mobile technologies are therefore making the process of education enchanting. Not only do they provide an enhanced learning experience but they are also proving to be quite cost effective.
It can thus be said that this technology is adding a touch of creativity and independence to classroom learning. In addition, it is also helping in the creation of a generation of independent thinkers. A generation which is more inclined to make the most of mobile technology to quench their learning needs. Be it for sharing photographs or filming experiments or sharing any learning material, the boon of this technology is immense. Besides, it not only leads to better learning ambience but also improved understanding.
The essence of this technology lies in drawing different forms of information ranging from commercially produced content to teacher produced or pupil created material in a trouble free manner. Apart from that, students can also take control of their own learning through resourcing and peer-to-peer collaborations and interactivity.
If you are one of those educators who haven't yet explored this technology, do not delay in adopting this any further. It will not only help you to execute the class training with ease but also give class learning a new dimension altogether. Remember, students find them quite intuitive and some teachers have already claimed their flexibility across curriculum.

5 Technologies That Transformed the Process of Learning

The invention of the internet and the new types of technologies in the 21st Century has transformed the traditional concepts of learning taking place in conventional 'brick and mortar' classrooms. Technology has indeed made learning more cost-effective and easily accessible. Staff members in such educational institutions also have a new friend in technology since it helps to bring about administrative efficiency to manage the overall learning process.
In this article, I have mentioned the best of technological inventions that has transformed the very structure of teaching and learning.
Wireless Connectivity
There has been a noticeable growth in the popularity factor of wireless connectivity these days. From corporate organizations to educational institutions, every organization is installing broadband connections in their respective sites to improve the process of work, training, and learning. Wireless access to broadband services is now fundamental to the way teachers connect and interact with their students, faculty, and research staff. Today, wireless connectivity is needed to conduct online classes and training, webinars, video conferencing, and so on.
E-books Downloading Option
Students don't need to buy countless number of text books to study and reference anymore. They can rather save this money by simply downloading e-books from Amazon, Borders and Barnes & Noble, and such similar other e-book sites. Some of the e-bookstores allow downloading of books for free while others require you to purchase the e-books.
Adoption of Mobile Payment Systems
Mobile payments are continuously on the rise as the more preferred transactional platform amongst individuals worldwide. Instead of paying with cash or via paper checks, people prefer to pay using their mobile devices, including cell phones and Smartphone. Mobile payments happen through direct mobile billing, via the web, and through direct operator billing. In the education sector, students can use their cell phones to pay admission and course fees in real-time. They don't need to travel all the way to the administration office to clear payment formalities.
Use of "Google Search"
"Google Search" is the most widely used search engine in the world. It is used by millions of people to get answers to their queries. Students are using Google Search everyday for a multitude of purpose.
Emailing
Students can instantly get in touch with the teacher after school hours via emails. School, college, and university teachers are now encouraging students to contact them via emails covering issues that need to be resolved at the earliest. Often teachers who don't find the time to listen to individual student problems during normal class hours can go through emails and address problems as soon as possible. Besides, students can always send their draft projects or assignments to the professor to have a glance through and point out areas that require improvement.

Distance Learning Technologies - Expanding Nursing and Math Fields

Technology has effected education. Many innovations have made a positive impact on how students learn and build success in the classroom. However, when it comes to technology, combined with the subject area of math, one would thin these two would be a perfect match. Needless to say, this has not been the case.
Math faculty members have found that instruction through technology has not been easy. Although on-line learning is more flexible and allows students additional opportunities for reflection, it hasn't proven friendly to instructors. The prominently test-oriented distance learning systems do not handle the diagrams and formulas necessary for math instruction. In most cases, instructors need to go through a series of steps to make communication/instruction possible.
An interesting fact was explained in several studies related to the human brain in the 2004 International Journal of Science Technology, written by Glenn Gordon Smith and David Ferguson, concerning visual short term memory. For both verbal and visual information, short term memory can hold a maximum of four to seven items. However, that four to seven item limit can be increased up to 16 items, if the items are presented purely visually and in a connected way. In other words, a properly developed diagram can greatly increase the retention of comprehension. This is important to know, when teaching math. The ability to instruct through diagrams and formulas is paramount to student skill acquisition and success.
Since diagrams, formulas, and notation are useful for math instruction, it is equally important that these tools can be easily accessed through online instruction. Up until recently, this hasn't been true. But today, new technologies are being developed to help. These innovative online tools are being used in colleges that enhance math instruction through the use of two way communication through diagrams and math notation.
Math instructors have found that these distance learning tools give students more opportunities to get involved. As a group, students solve math problems. Students are given a single step to complete and explain the process used. Then, another student proceeds with the next step and so on. The online tools allow each student to use different colors to help differentiate the steps and reveal each person's contribution. This group approach to instruction involves all the students, without the fear of standing in front of others in class. It also gives students pride in their own work, through visual and verbal modes.
It has been noted that unlike the traditional community college student, the online math student is likely to be a mature female. These students are returning to school and at the same time, holding down a full time job. Providing safe opportunities to gain knowledge through online math tools has proven helpful. Multimedia motivates students to be attentive and stimulated. Each year, innovations are developed. Higher education needs to keep up on these advances. The online tools are powerful components to successful online math courses. It is important that colleges meet the needs of employers in math related fields. This can only be done by keeping a pulse on new advancements in math online instruction.
The health field has been growing in leaps and bounds. Community colleges are striving to produce students, who are able to communicate confidently. Nurses with effective communication skills are advocates for their patients and themselves. Colleges are examining the traditional passive lecture method of instruction and trying out new strategies. Schools need to provide an active, meaningful, and authentic setting for students. Online courses and technology has helped community colleges move in this direction.
Nursing students today have access to e-mail, bulletin boards, online courses, tests, case studies, and clinical skill videos. Students have found that the curriculum online is also enhanced. Courses are more interactive and prepare students to be self reliant. One of the most advantageous aspects of online instruction has been the implementation of tests. The licensing exam, although not given by the community college, is accessed through a computer. Online students taking exams do so through the computer. These students find their levels of test anxiety diminishing.
Nursing, along with other occupational programs can have low enrollment and be costly. Online classes can give community colleges the opportunity to provide these classes, until the enrollment catches up with the demand of these professions. By sharing with students existing technology, community college faculty are preparing them for the modern-day workforce. With the skyrocketing need for these professionals, online distance learning education is a valuable means of instruction.
Although not all technology used in the classroom proves favorable. One study showed that faculty websites do not improve students' perceptions of teacher credibility and learning expectations. Instead, no data could be found to support the belief that a website affects the student's perception of the teacher or course. Suggestions were made as to why this finding was discovered. One reason could be that although students have knowledge of the Internet, they still want face-to-face contact with their instructor and fellow students.
Technology is here to stay. It is time for educators to begin assessing which tools and strategies work the best. Implementing the right technologies will benefit all students.

Smart Meters, Smart Grids, and Smart Technologies

For those seeking to reduce not just costs but carbon footprint, the arrival of smart technologies, smart grids, and smart meters are a huge boon. What are they?
Smart grids
The smart grid has been described as less of a thing and more of a vision. It is a vision for a power delivery system that
1. provides power when and where it is needed;
2. can withstand - or, at the very least, quickly recover from - physical damage or even cyber attacks;
3. provides fair prices by adjusting according to the laws of supply and demand;
4. minimizes transmission and distribution losses;
5. helps customers to better manage their energy usage; and
6. enables the integration of intermittent sources of energy, thus helping reduce the environmental impact created when people are forced to depend on fossil fuel energy alone as a reliable energy source.
Fortunately, this is a vision that already exists, and one of its most basic elements is the smart meter.
Smart technologies
Smart technologies is the blanket term for innovations designed to make life better for humans not just in terms of convenience but also in terms of environmental preservation. Two of the primary ways these devices accomplish this are by helping energy users become more aware of how they are using energy and by helping the end users schedule their energy use at off-peak hours, for lower energy costs.
One reason why peak-hour energy use is discouraged is because, in order to fill the sudden spike of energy usage, "extra power plants have to be fired up, or power has to be imported, and those costs are high," explained Dr. Guy Newsham, from the National Research Council Canada.
"Eventually, these costs are passed on to the consumer."
Therefore, the goal is what experts call the "zero peak" establishment, which uses no energy from the grid during the peak-use times in their regions.
This can be accomplished by installing batteries, which can be charged during off-peak periods, so that the now-off-grid energy can be used by the office during peak times.
Other ways are to program some appliances - such as photocopiers or air conditioners, perhaps - to run only during off-peak hours.
Of course, the best technology for green businesses is that which uses no grid energy at all. This can be done with the installation of some of the highly efficient solar panels currently in the market, or through other forms of alternative energy that can be produced for the company's own use.
Smart meters
Smart meters are electric meters - and sometimes also natural gas or water meters - that record real-time use of power at regular intervals, then report that data back to the central system, both for billing and survey purposes.
The benefits of this system for the consumer is, first, it puts an end to estimated bills, and second, with the detailed information on energy consumption, consumers can better identify when and where their energy costs are coming from and, from that information, find ways to use up less energy and produce less carbon emissions.
For instance, in February 2012, British Gas published a finding from data they gathered from smart meters that, in the case of many businesses, nearly half of the total energy consumption occurs during hours when most businesses are not even open. Some causes pointed out by British Gas are the display lights being kept on even when a store is closed, or the vending machines being left on after work hours, or keeping lights in the parking lot on even when nobody is coming to the office.
From such insights, businesses can significantly cut their energy consumption and, in effect, reduce their carbon footprint.
New boilers can also help you become more energy efficient.

Technologies That Provide the Inner-Workings of Virtual Offices

There are four main technologies that make virtual offices work: The Internet, VOIP, Unified Messaging and Cloud Computing Technology. Unless you've been living under a rock, I'm sure at some point in your life you've used or heard of at least one of these forms of technology.
The Internet
Let's face it; the Internet is one form of technology that most of us cannot live without. It's a part of our everyday lives. It's a resource that 85% or more of small business owners use to run their businesses. The Internet allows us to check our email, host our websites, shop online, pay our bills and most importantly use various tools to provide services to our clients.
VOIP - What is it?
VOIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) is a technology that gives us the ability to use phone services over the Internet. As a matter of fact, traditional phone lines are slowly being phased out as small, medium and large businesses are reaping the benefits of using VOIP systems. The main benefits of using VOIP are the ability to make long distance phone calls, hold conference calls, use caller ID, call forwarding and other features that traditional telephone companies normally you charge for are available for free. Isn't that AWESOME?
Unified Messaging Systems
Unified Messaging is a technology that works with VOIP systems and is a feature that runs virtual office phone systems. Unified Messaging combines the integration of email, instant messaging, fax, voicemail, video messaging, and text messaging technologies together for storage onto a single system. For example, with traditional communications systems messages are delivered onto several types of storage systems such as Voicemail systems, Fax machines and email servers. Whereas with Unified Messaging Systems all of these different types of messages are stored in one place. This feature simplifies the user experience by giving them one place to check for messages rather than checking multiple places to retrieve messages.
Ultimately, the premise behind creating Unified Messaging Systems was to have a place where all of the above technologies can be brought together onto one platform to make communication as seamless as possible.
Cloud Computing: The Revolution
Cloud Computing Technology is taking the world by storm. You may have heard cloud computing being referred to as "The Cloud". This form of technology allows multiple servers to share resources that run various hardware and software applications over the "Internet" that can be accessed via web browsers. In essence cloud computing features web-based software and hardware applications that run over the Internet. The main benefits of using services in "The Cloud" are:
Cloud services and applications are web-based and can be accessed anytime, anywhere, 24/7 as long as you have an Internet connection from a computer, Smartphone, or tablet device
Cloud applications work with multiple Operating System platforms such as Windows, Linux and Macintosh computers
Cloud applications and services are very inexpensive and allow you to pay as you go to use them
In most cases, there is no need for you to install software or purchase hardware to use cloud services

What Are Some Web 2.0 Technologies?

Put simply, web 2.0 is visitors to your site interacting with it. This can take different forms, depending on what type of interaction you want your customers to have with your company web site.
Testimonials and reviews-
Allowing your customers to post their opinions of your products or services, and give their honest reviews of them is a double edged sword for some. You will always find a very select few people who will complain and say negative things about nearly everything they encounter. There really isn't much that can be done about them, but if you have the option to delete these remarks, you can at least keep the damage they do to a minimum. If the review or input is not seriously negative, and you can post a response right along with it that explains the solution to the problem, this gives your visitors a sense that you want to make things right and they can trust your company. Naturally the glowing, positive reviews and comments should overshadow any negative ones, and these should be highlighted whenever possible.
Forwarding and Sharing-
Allowing your customers and site visitors to participate in your web site's online community makes them more prone to feel loyalty to you, and share your link with others. The more interactive they get with your site the more they feel a personal connection with your company. People love to share information and findings with their friends, and when you use web 2.0 they are more likely to do so.
Communication-
A company can communicate with their readers and customers when using their own web site to engage their readers and get their opinions. This also better enables you to serve the reader's needs more fully, since they are telling you what they want. Communication needs to be a two way street when it comes to online commerce, and web 2.0 helps you to keep in touch with what your readers want, and what areas you may need to improve on.
Surveys and Polls-
Find out what is hot and what is not with your readers by asking them questions and tailoring your product line to fit the answers. Finding trends in certain geographic or demographic categories can help you to better use your advertising dollars to promote products you know will be popular, based on what your readers have to say. Everyone has an opinion, and the internet is a reasonably safe place for them to express it. Ask readers what they think, and you will get volumes in return.
Web 2.0 hasn't gone away. It's actually even more important now than before; learn a lot more on our website.

How to Write Articles on Cell Phone Technologies

Did you know there have been more cell phones sold in the United States than the amount of our population; it's true. Come to think of it, I had one of the very first cell phones, and it was a novelty item, it really helped me improve my business communication, and since I was in a mobile service business it did wonders for increasing my sales, and efficiency. But as we fast forward to today everyone has a cell phone even kids in school in fourth grade.
And the devices we used to call cell phones, are now called smart phones because they do so many different things. This is the first generation growing up that doesn't wear wrist watches anymore, they don't need to, their smart phone has the time, and they're constantly looking at it or texting a message on it anyway. It's amazing how technology changes our lives.
Now with GPS on cell phones parents know exactly where their kids go, so they can tell them a white lie and visit their friends house, or do something they are not supposed to. Well, they still can, but now they'll get caught.
All these facts provide an opportunity for online article authors, in that people are interested in cell phone and smartphone technologies, and they go out of their way to search these topics on the Internet. There are several types of articles an online article author can produce.
One of the most common types of articles is the cell phone review article. After all, sometimes it seems there are an unlimited number of cell phone models to choose from. Folks, also like to know about GPS technologies, battery life, new features, Internet compatibility, built-in video cameras, and all the interesting bells and whistles that are now available.
If you are writing articles on the Internet about cellphone technologies, I recommend that you research these topics, and pass on this information in your articles. Please consider all this.

Online Bookstores Offer New Technologies

Technology is changing the life of people - with the Web, more and more people are incorporating their computers or smart phones into their lives. Along with doing banking and shopping online, people are even more adding to that list of things that can be done online.
Online bookstores started by revolutionizing the textbook industry. When once students troop to neighborhood bookstores and spending hundreds of dollars on new books, online bookstores are selling used books, renting them out for a semester, buying used ones and offering digital versions. But what they can contribute to a student and professor's life doesn't end here - they are now adding new technologies and services to make education even more convenient to all:
  1. Shopping and Comparing Prices just got simpler - With the vastness of the Web, shopping is not always easy online. But online bookstores are making shopping for books easier, and cheaper - with one site, one click, the bookstore will show you different options available for a student, whether buying new or used, renting or downloading an eBook. You can also instantly see the prices per option, making it easier for you to choose between options and prices. With the rising prices of everything, saving money is truly important.

  2. Trade in your used book - If you need a book but lack the cash to do so, online bookstores are offering book trades or swaps. Simply type in your used book's information and you will see an assessment of the value of your book - either in dollar amounts, or in points. This money or these points can then work towards you getting a new book, without even breaking the bank!

  3. Classes are also now Online - Let's face it, students nowadays spend a lot of time online, on social networks where they connect with their friends and family. This is the same idea behind online class pages - connecting the professor and students. On these pages, users can collaborate, share tips and discuss with each other.

  4. Write instead of Recite - Some professors can benefit from class forums to extend class discussions online - perfect for checking for students' understanding of class topics. Instead of homework, students can gain credit for participating in forums. This is also a perfect venue for students to talk to professors, ask questions or clarify lessons.

  5. Digital Hand-outs - In the past, professors printed out hand-outs or notes and even syllabus, which is not the greenest solution out there. With class pages, professors can upload all important class documents, from readings to notes, for students to view at home using their computers.
There is much to look forward to, as technology gets more and more integrated with human lives. In the area of education, specifically, classes can evolve in the future and make learning more fun for both professors and students.

Britannic Technologies Debates - Hosted Vs On-Premises Telephone Systems

There is certainly something to be said for centralising resources in business, keeping everything tidy and close to hand. This is undoubtedly one of the largest advantages in on-premises telephone solutions over hosted telephony, allowing you the opportunity to be entirely self-reliant and rarely waiting on other people to resolve problems. However, this way of working is highly dependent on a well-trained and highly skilled IT department who don't have too many other demands on their time.
A hosted telephony service uses the support and facilities of an external provider, which often means that trouble shooting, though conducted remotely, is efficient. It is also provided with customer service as a priority which often results in a fast, friendly and very helpful service. Hosted telephony providers are also able to spend time monitoring usage ensuring that you are getting the best deal for your dollar. Moreover, businesses investing in hosted telephony are likely to save a great deal of money in the short term; not only are the costs of purchasing hardware or software limited to almost nothing as you are simply using those already put in place by the provider, but you also only pay for what you use with most hosted telephony providers working on a "per-seat" basis. This means that you only pay for as much of the equipment as you yourself are using as a business, rather than incurring costs for the system as a whole. Moreover, when it comes to deployment of hosted telephony systems, transitions made from traditional phone systems are easily done, and with all the details and logistics managed by the providers, you can sit back, relax and wait for the new phone system to be up and running.
Though there are many arguments for a hosted VOIP service, there are also some things to bear in mind before going for this over on-premises solutions. The first thing to consider, is how well the external supplier understands your business and its needs; can they provide the administrative functions that they need, and most importantly can the respond to your requests and tweak the services you require effectively, factoring in elements such as seasonal fluctuations in your data and call traffic. Whilst hosted VOIP services may be a great deal simpler initially, they potentially lack the element of customisation that on-premises solutions offer. They also lack the same level of flexibility as rather than flagging the IT guy when he next walks past, you are reliant on somebody offsite. Another thing to consider is the longer term cost implications.
Whilst the initial outlay for on-premises solutions is undoubtedly higher than for hosted VOIP services, the ongoing costs are less. On-premises solutions incur only operation and maintenance costs plus the salary of the IT department that is going to be responsible for it. Hosted VOIP services will involve regular fees which may add up to more than the cost of the equipment itself over the course of a few years. Moreover, there is an ongoing concern that the providing your hosted VOIP services may run into trouble and go under, or perhaps even consolidate with a competitor which may leave you with an increase in your fees which you were not expecting.
