Stereoscopic 3D Viewing Technologies

3D imaging or more commonly known as stereoscopic 3D refers to the process of making or enhancing the illusion of depth of a given image by presenting the viewer two slightly different images to each eye. As there is a certain distance between the two eyes of the viewer, they see slightly different facet of the given images. The illusion of depth is obtained when these images are combined in the brain of the viewer. Nowadays, stereoscopic 3D is generally used in paintings, movies and televisions. Raw stereoscopic 3D images will not give the illusion of depth when viewed directly by the eyes. It needs some medium on the image or the viewer's eyes. Let us walk-through some of the 3D viewers technologies, which helps to perceive the illusion of depth in the stereoscopic 3D media.
Active 3D viewers
Active 3D viewers generally comprises of liquid crystal shutter glasses, also known as active shutter glasses. It needs some source of electricity and works by rapidly presenting the stereoscopic 3D image intended for the right eye at the same time blocking the left eye view and vice verse to augment the illusion of depth. This active 3D viewing technology can be applied to LCD TV and Plasma TV as well as CRT TV and other types of video displays. The main advantage of this technology is that this liquid crystal shutter glasses are neutral with colour, which allows 3D viewing of the stereoscopic 3D media in full colour spectrum. In addition to this, they also eliminate 3D crosstalk or interference.
Passive 3D viewers
Passive 3D viewers usually comprises of linearly polarized glasses and circular polarized glasses. While to create illusion of depth on linearly polarized glasses, stereoscopic 3D images are projected, overlaying onto the same screen with straight angle polarizing filters. On the other hand to present the stereoscopic 3D media on the circular polarized glasses, the 3D images are projected overlaying onto the screen with clockwise or anti-clockwise polarizing filters. Some of the benefits of this technology are as below:
1. Does not require any power source.
2. Does not have any flicker / sparkles.
3. Can deliver brighter 3D media.
4. They are inexpensive compared to active 3D viewers
5. Does not cause eye strains
6. They are very light in weight
7. Have a wide viewing angle compared to active 3D viewers
Stereoscopic 3D technology is starting to get used more and more these days. Movies and television series as well as video games are implementing this technology to give the viewer the most visual experience.
